An X-Acto knife is a precision cutting tool and you should be able to cut out each shape directly and cleanly on the line. You can be confident in your cutting abilities when you are able to cut every shape on the page without ripping or tearing any part of the paper. While doing an exercise like this, keep a few of the following considerations in mind:

Off Hand Location: The hand you are holding the X-Acto knife with is generally safe while cutting because the blade is secured in the handle you are holding. However, you should be extremely mindful of the location of your off hand while cutting, especially since most of the time that hand is holding the material you are cutting down against the cutting mat. Be mindful to always keep your hand away and behind the cutting path of your blade. If your hands are no where near the cutting path, you significantly reduce the chance of injury.
Blade Sharpness: An X-Acto Knife Blade is extremely sharp. This blade should have no problem cutting through paper, cardstock, or foam core. A dull blade not only will have a harder time cutting through these things and show signs by tearing and ripping instead of cutting, but is also significantly more dangerous to use. A dull blade requires more pressure to cut and drags more on material so if you slip and cut any part of you, it will be with much more force than the force you would have needed if the blade was sharp.
