This is a quick guide on how to turn a business card layout that you created in illustrator into a digital mockup in photoshop.
In illustrator start a document that is 3.5"x2" which is the standard size of a business card. We will be mocking up one card so we do not need to worry about the margins outside of the card since this is not setting up multiple cards to be printed out on a sheet and cut. For this example I will be using a white background which is the standard for a business card but other colors can work and the process is the same.
Some design considerations when making your business card layout:
Know what information is important to you to have on the card
Pay attention to alignment of the elements and use guide lines
Simple is often times better, especially with a business card
Choose a font that is readable
Once you are happy with your design save your file as a PDF and find a blank business card mock up on a stock website. A free one that I have found success using is pexels. Once you find one you like download it and open the file in photoshop.
A mockup is taking a digital file that you created and super imposing it over another image to represent what it may look like if it was produced. You can have mockups for everything ranging from movie posters, product packaging, clothing, and yes a simple business card. Since there are quite a few steps to creating a mockup file I made a quick video going through the process. This is a very simple way to create a mockup file and really only works for flat rectangular mockups with nothing obstructing the view or shadows. There are other steps to create a mockup that wraps around an object, like a water bottle for instance, that I will go over later.
